Itinerary

Day 1  Perth to Fitzgerald River National Park (L& D)

Nullarbor Traveller - 9 Day Perth to Adelaide

Our adventure begins as we travel East over the Darling Ranges. After a morning break at the historic township of York we continue our journey south. Our lunch stop will be at Wave Rock, where there is the opportunity to have a look at this amazing rock formation. After lunch we drive further south to our camp near the coast of the Fitzgerald River National Park, an internationally recognized world biosphere reserve with plenty of beautiful beaches and rugged coastline.

Our evening meal and overnight accommodation is with a fascinating person, Mary Richardson, who will explain how she built her straw house, manages a tea house while providing a feast of nature’s own foods and bush foods from the district.

Tonight we camp at Mary’s place. There are only toilet facilities.

Day 2 Fitzgerald River National Park to Cape le Grand  (B, L, D)

After a morning drive along the coast we arrive into Esperance with time to have a look around. The town is still remote but once you see the magnificent surrounds of the granite, bush and beach you can only wonder for how much longer this area can keep its quaint charm. Get set for some of Australia's most beautiful scenery. This area of Western Australia has no less than 9 National Parks, which is testament to its beauty and uniqueness. We take in the most spectacular of all, Cape Le Grand National Park. Stunning blue seas mix with powder white beaches and secluded bays allow for stops and swims in what can only be described as a nature lover’s paradise.

A short drive brings us to the Cape Le Grand National Park where we set up camp only meters from a picture postcard beach. The afternoon is free to explore this stunning coastal park with its white sandy beaches and crystal clear water. A late afternoon hike up the granite formation known as“Frenchman Peak” rewards you with stunning views of the bay and islands of the Recherche Archipelago.

Tonight we camp at Cape Le Grand National Park. There are toilet and shower facilities.(BLD)

Day 3 Cape le Grand to Newman’s Rocks(B, L, D)

It’s totally up to you how you would like to spend the morning enjoying this beautiful area. You may like to do one of the magnificent coastal walks, go for a swim or just relax and read a good book while lying on a pure white beach, you might have to share with a couple of locals, kangaroo’s that is. After lunch, we head back through Esperance and then north to the Eyre highway to start our journey east bound,in for a big days drive across the plain, taking in Caiguna“Blow Hole” before our next overnight camp.

People say the sky in Australia looks bigger than elsewhere. Tonight you get an IMAX sized version of the great southern night sky. Pick out the star sign constellations, the Southern Cross, planets and be amazed by the show of shooting stars so prevalent in the clear skies of the desert plain. No photograph or movie could ever do justice to this night sky spectacular. This is something you can only experience.

Tonight we bush camp. There are no facilities but prior to establishing camp and first thing next morning toilet facilities are available.(BLD)

Day 4  Newman’s Rocks to Koonalda Homestead  (B, L, D)

Today will certainly give you a sense of the size of this vast and ancient land. The Nullarbor Plain is the largest piece of limestone in the world and is internationally recognised for its hidden treasures beneath the ground. It has an internationally recognised cave and lake systemand is the source of many international divers who come here to explore this unique landscape.. See the way the desert can devour an entire town and head west across Australia's great plain.

We head towards Eucla, after checking out the old town of Eucla which struggled and lost in its battle against the ever encroaching desert sands, the reality of the Nullarbor really hits you! We stop for the night at Koonalda Homestead one of the original settlers homesteads, once used as a service station on the old Eyre Highwayjust over the South Australian boarder and get prepared to be bedazzled by one of nature’s greatest shows.

Tonight we bush camp. There are limited toilet facilities.

Day 5 Koonalda Homestead to Coodlie Park  (B, L, D)

The majestic Nullarbor cliffs, the famous wombat/camel/kangaroo road sign are some of the sights today. At the Head of the Bight we stop to take in the staggering sheer drop of the Bunda Cliffs where Australia suddenly and dramatically ends and drops into the ocean. If travelling between June and October it is very likely you will get to see some giants of the ocean, the Southern Right Whales. A pod of about 100 whales come every year to this spot to give birth to whale calves. There is no need for a boat trip as the whales come right close to the sheer drop of the cliffs and use the sheltered waters below as their resting spot. This is a truly spellbinding sight and difficult to tear yourself away from these creatures as they breach, roll and tail slap just off the shore below the viewing platform.

We stop at the Wombat/Camel/Kangaroo sign and you can have your picture taken with Australia’s signature post card. We drive onto the Nullarbor Plain and across the dingo fence while travelling through Yalata Aboriginal lands. In the afternoon we are heading to the Ceduna Arts and Cultural Centre. Here you will learn more about the different styles and meaning behind many forms of Indigenous art. Later in the afternoon we arrive at our farm stay, Coodlie Park. This working farm has traditional cropping, organic food growing and a project of tree planting on their own land to offset their own carbon emissions

Tonight you are in a bed in dorm style accommodation with shared toilet and shower facilities.

Day 6 Coodlie Park and Baird Bay  (B, L, D)

Our first stop today is Bairds Bay, which is a sublime stretch of coastline where we can spend time on the beach and heaving a swim. It’s an opportunity to experience one of Australia's most unique wildlife experiences of swimming with dolphins and sea lions. This incredible optional wildlife experience involves a 4-hour boat cruise. We find the friendly populations and can swim and snorkel amongst them. There is nothing that can parallel the feeling of communing with wild creatures such as these. (OE $140)

After this amazing experience a short drive brings us to Murphy’s Haystacks, incredible granite rock formations sculptured into wondrous and weird shapes over millions of years.

Then we drive back to our over night’s spot– Coodlie Park where we finish the day with some extreme fun sand boarding. Our hosts Hassie, Jo and family then conduct a nocturnal spotlighting tour looking for Australia’s National Emblems– Kangaroos, Wombats and Emus.

Tonight you are in a bed in dorm style accommodation with shared toilet and shower facilities.

Day 7Coodlie Park to Mikkira(B, L, D)

This morning we head out and learn to surf with Spike. So we go to a beautiful deserted beach and spend the next two hours mastering the surf breaks. After learning to surf at Sceales Bay, we go to the Colton Bakery - a unique wood fired bakery on the side of the highway with an honesty pay system. We meet Mark the owner of Colton Bakery and walk through this interesting bakery.

We travel to Locks Well and admire the view and the man made 291 steps down“Staircase to Heaven” to the Locks Well beach. We then travel on to the city of Port Lincoln where after lunch we go to Mikkira Station where we camp on a private campground with Koalas in nearly every tree.  We have time to go for a walk around the property to see some Giant Yakkas and see if you can find some koalas in the Manna Gums around Mikkira station.

Tonight we camp on Mikkira Station. There are limited toilet and shower facilities.(BLD)

Day 8 Mikkira to Point Gibbon.(B, L, D)

Today is an extreme day of fun! Those that dare come face to face with the Great White Shark on a day tour [optional experience $495] which includes a video highlights of your experience.

For those not wishing to be quite so extreme head out to Whalers Way Conservation Park for some spectacular and stunning coastlines. If we are lucky we will see some kangaroos and emus in this privately owned Flora and Fauna Reserve. This drive is followed by a visit to Glen Forest Wildlife Park to have a relaxed lunch and visit the wildlife you saw on the Nullarbor up close. You even get to hand feed some of the animals. In the afternoon we will go to the Port Lincoln marina and go out on a boat to swim with and hand feed tuna - it is like swimming with lightening as these unique fish go into a frenzy while being fed as you snorkel your way around the ring.

Tonight we camp. There are limited toilet and shower facilities.

Day 9 Point Gibbon to Adelaide (B, L)

We head through Whyalla and into Port Augusta and the Wadlata Cultural Centre that helps provide answers to the many questions about the formation of the Nullarbor, Flinder Rangers, and the formation of Australia as a continent. It also takes you on an interpretative walk through the life of the new frontier pioneers. From Port Augusta we follow the Southern Flinders Ranges to Mt Remarkable National Park to have lunch and do our last bushwalk. After lunch we hit the road again and head for South Australia’s capital city Adelaide.
